The map

About this Saphan Sung map poster

Saphan Sung is a district in eastern Bangkok, and its name means high bridge. It sits where the city begins to give way to its eastern suburbs. From above, it shows the typical structure of outer Bangkok: a few long main roads, with narrow sois branching off them, many ending in dead ends or housing estates.

Canals, or khlongs, remain a major part of the map. They run through the district in long straight lines or gentle curves, once serving as the main transport routes and now running between the housing developments. Some are lined with footpaths and small communities built right on the water's edge.

A Saphan Sung map poster shows the city at a finer scale than its famous centre. There are no palaces or river bends, only the dense, fishbone pattern of sois and the threads of water running through it, which is what much of Bangkok actually looks like.

01

Khlong network

Canals cross the district in long lines, a reminder of the waterways that once connected Bangkok's outer areas and still divide its neighbourhoods.

02

Fishbone sois

Narrow lanes branch off the main roads like ribs from a spine, often ending in dead ends, giving the map a distinctive comb-like texture.

03

Housing estates

Planned residential developments appear as compact clusters with their own internal loops and cul-de-sacs, set between the canals and main roads.
