The map

About this Sapucaia map poster

Sapucaia lies in the north of Rio de Janeiro state, on the Paraíba do Sul river, which forms the border with Minas Gerais here. The town follows the valley. Its streets line the riverbank and fill the narrow flat ground between the water and the steep green hills of the Serra do Mar hinterland. On a map, the river is the obvious backbone, a broad curve with the town hugging one side.

The street pattern is linear and somewhat irregular. A main road runs parallel to the river, with shorter streets branching toward the slopes. The railway also follows the valley, as it does in many Paraíba towns. Beyond the town, the hills are covered in pasture and remnants of forest, and small roads wind up them in tight switchbacks.

A Sapucaia map poster shows how geography shapes a small town. Nothing here is gridded for the sake of a plan. Everything follows the river and the valley, which gives the print a flowing, horizontal composition.

01

Paraíba do Sul

The wide river runs through the map and forms the border between two states. The town grows along its banks as a long, thin strip.

02

Valley-floor streets

Main streets run parallel to the river on the narrow flat land. Their shape tells you exactly where the hills begin.

03

Winding hill roads

Rural roads climb the surrounding slopes in curves and switchbacks, adding delicate, looping lines to the edges of the print.
