The map
Schaffhausen sits on the Rhine in northern Switzerland, on the river's right bank, where Swiss territory reaches north into Germany. The river curves along the south side of the old town, which is a compact knot of lanes and small squares. On the hill above it stands the Munot, a circular sixteenth-century fortress that shows as a clear ring on any detailed map.
The town is known for its painted façades and its many oriel windows, the carved bay windows that project from burghers' houses along the old streets. Just downstream, in Neuhausen, the Rhine drops over the Rhine Falls, one of the largest waterfalls in Europe by volume. Schaffhausen is also home to the watchmaker IWC, whose factory is on the riverbank.
A Schaffhausen map poster captures the town where the river sets the terms. The Rhine gives the composition a strong, flowing edge. The dense medieval core sits against it, and the vineyards and wooded slopes of the Randen rise behind. It suits anyone who loves Swiss towns that have kept their historic shape.

The Rhine sweeps along the southern edge of the centre, a broad band of water that frames the town and continues toward the falls.
Narrow lanes and small squares form an irregular, tightly packed pattern, in clear contrast to the more open districts further up the slopes.
