The map
Sint-Katelijne-Waver lies in the province of Antwerp, directly north of Mechelen. It is known across Belgium for horticulture. Vegetables and fruit grown under glass here supply one of the region's main produce auctions, and greenhouses cover much of the land between the village centres.
From above, the municipality is a patchwork, not a single town. Several village cores are linked by ribbon development along the old roads, with narrow field lanes running between plots and glasshouses. Small watercourses and drainage ditches cross the landscape in thin, irregular lines.
A Sint-Katelijne-Waver map poster turns this working landscape into a surprisingly intricate drawing. The village centres appear as small dense clusters, the connecting roads as threads of houses, and the fields in between as a mosaic of rectangles. It is Flanders at its most characteristic: productive, finely divided and carefully tended.
Large rectangular glasshouses and growing plots create a strong geometric pattern between the villages, unusual on most town maps.
Houses line the old connecting roads for long stretches, producing the linear settlement pattern typical of rural Flanders.
In the south, the streets thicken as the municipality meets the northern edge of Mechelen and its denser urban fabric.
