The map
Songo lies in Tete province in northwestern Mozambique, in hills above the Zambezi. The town was built to house the workers who constructed and operate the Cahora Bassa dam, one of the largest hydroelectric schemes in Africa. On the map, it is a planned settlement of curving streets set on a ridge in rugged country.
The dam holds back Lake Cahora Bassa, a long reservoir stretching far upstream to the west. Below the wall, the Zambezi continues through a deep gorge. Roads wind down from the town towards the dam and the power station, following the contours of the steep ground.
A Songo map poster shows a rare kind of place: a town whose layout comes from a single engineering project. Its streets fit into the topography rather than a grid, and the water beyond gives the composition a strong natural counterweight. In black and white, the contrast between built and wild is especially clear.
The dam wall closes a narrow gorge on the Zambezi. On the map it appears as a short, decisive line where the broad lake suddenly narrows into the river below.
Lake Cahora Bassa stretches upstream with an irregular, branching shoreline that follows the flooded valleys. Its edges form the most intricate natural lines in the area.
Songo's streets curve with the ridges instead of running straight. The result is a looping, organic pattern typical of towns designed around difficult terrain.

Why Songo
Many families and engineers have lived in Songo because of the dam, and for them the town is tied to a particular chapter of their lives. The map records that place calmly, with the river and the lake giving it scale.
