The map
Százhalombatta lies on the right bank of the Danube, about thirty kilometres south of Budapest. Its name means roughly hundred mounds, a reference to the Iron Age burial tumuli that still rise from the landscape around the town. Several have been excavated and presented in an archaeological park, giving the area a sense of age that sits alongside its modern industry.
In the second half of the twentieth century the town grew rapidly around the Danube oil refinery and a power station, both occupying large sites along the river. On a map these industrial grounds appear as big, orderly shapes, while the residential neighbourhoods spread inland in a mix of housing estates and streets of family houses.
A Százhalombatta map poster brings together layers that rarely share a frame: the Danube shoreline, the industrial geometry of the refinery and the quieter residential streets. It suits people who have worked at the plant, grown up in the estates or taken an interest in the archaeology of the Carpathian Basin.
The river forms the eastern edge of the town, a broad, gently curving band of water that gives the composition a strong natural boundary.
The refinery and power station sites along the river appear as extensive, regular blocks of roads and structures, an industrial pattern unlike the rest of the town.
The ancient tumuli that gave the town its name are scattered across the surrounding land, and several are preserved in an archaeological park on the edge of town.
