The map
Tha Muang is a district town in Kanchanaburi Province in western Thailand, on the Mae Klong River downstream from Kanchanaburi town. The river curves through the area in broad loops. The town grew along it, with a small grid of shophouse streets near the bank and newer housing stretching along the main roads.
The river here is also managed on a large scale. The Mae Klong Dam, also called the Vajiralongkorn Dam, lies within Tha Muang district and diverts water into an irrigation network that serves the lower plain. On the map this system appears as long, straight canals and ditches, laid out with engineering precision against the natural curves of the river.
The Tha Muang map poster shows that meeting of river and engineering: winding water, ruler-straight channels and a large patchwork of cane and rice fields between them. The town itself is small and dense by comparison. It is a graphic, almost architectural print, well suited to anyone interested in rivers, farming or the landscape of western Thailand.
The river loops across the plain past the town, its wide curves providing the main natural shape of the poster.
The barrage within the district controls the river and feeds irrigation water to the lowlands downstream, appearing as a sharp line across the channel.
Long, straight canals and ditches divide the farmland into large geometric blocks, a pattern that stands out against the curving river.
