The map

About this Tome map poster

Tome, in northern Miyagi Prefecture, was formed in 2005 when nine towns merged. On the map it is less a single city than a wide farming landscape dotted with settlements. Rice paddies in regular rectangles cover most of the flat land, and farmhouses and wooded hills break up the pattern.

The Kitakami River, one of the longest in the Tōhoku region, runs through the eastern part of the city. Its course is lined by embankments and crossed by a few bridges. The former castle town of Toyoma, beside the river, keeps a group of Meiji-era buildings that has earned it the nickname of Miyagi's Meiji village.

In the northwest, Tome shares the Izunuma and Uchinuma lakes with neighbouring Kurihara. These Ramsar-listed wetlands are a wintering ground for large flocks of geese and swans. A Tome map poster brings together these calm elements: water, embankments, field grids and the small towns in between.

01

The Kitakami River

The river crosses the eastern part of the city between long embankments. Its broad curves contrast with the straight edges of the paddy fields on either side.

02

Izunuma wetlands

The shallow lakes on the northwestern edge appear as irregular shapes of open water, surrounded by fields. They are a well-known wintering ground for migrating waterbirds.

03

Toyoma's streets

The former castle town keeps a compact historic core by the river. Its small grid of streets stands out clearly among the farmland around it.

Why Tome

A map that means something

Tome speaks to people who know the rhythm of rice country: flooded fields in spring, gold in autumn, geese in winter. Its map is calm and open, and it suits rooms where a quieter, more spacious image works better than a dense city grid.

Add a title, subtitle and coordinates line of your choice, such as the name of one of the former towns or a family date. Choose one of five styles, including Blueprint or Sand, and get HD files immediately or a printed poster by post.
