The map

About this Trier map poster

Trier lies on the Moselle River in western Germany, close to the border with Luxembourg. From above, the city spreads along the river's east bank in a broad valley, with steep, vineyard-covered slopes rising on both sides. The historic centre sits inside a ring of avenues that follows the line of the old walls, and several bridges cross the Moselle to the western districts.

Founded by the Romans as Augusta Treverorum, Trier is often called Germany's oldest city. It still has an unusual number of Roman monuments: the Porta Nigra city gate, the Imperial Baths, the amphitheatre, the Basilica of Constantine and the Roman Bridge, whose piers still carry traffic today. Karl Marx was born here in 1818.

A Trier map poster shows two thousand years of city building in a single frame. The river curves through the valley, the ring road encloses the old town, and the large footprints of the Roman sites are visible among the streets. Vineyards and forests on the slopes give the composition a natural border.

01

Roman Bridge

The Roman Bridge crosses the Moselle near the old town, and its line on the map has stayed essentially the same for almost two millennia.

02

Porta Nigra

The monumental Roman gate stands at the northern edge of the old town, where the ring of avenues meets the main street leading into the centre.

03

Moselle valley

The river runs through a wide valley between steep slopes, so the city's streets fill the valley floor and thin out quickly as the ground rises.
