The map
Ushibuka is a port area at the southern end of Shimoshima, the largest of the Amakusa Islands in Kumamoto Prefecture, and is now part of the city of Amakusa. The town wraps around a sheltered harbour, with streets squeezed onto the narrow strip of flat land between the water and the steep, wooded hills. On the map, the coastline dominates every direction.
Ushibuka has long been a fishing port, and its harbour fills with fishing boats. It is also known for the Ushibuka Haiya Bridge, designed by the architect Renzo Piano and completed in 1997, which spans the harbour in a long, gentle curve. On the map the bridge appears as a thin line across the water, linking the two sides of the town.
A Ushibukamachi map poster captures a small Japanese harbour town in close focus. The irregular, deeply indented coastline, the dense streets along the shore and the empty hills behind them make an image with strong contrast and an almost sculptural outline.

Renzo Piano's bridge crosses the harbour in a long curve. On the map it is a delicate line over the water, joining the two halves of the town.
Wooded hills rise sharply behind the waterfront, leaving little room for building. The streets end abruptly at their edge, giving the town a clear, compact outline.
