About this Wil map poster
Wil is the main town of the western part of the canton of St. Gallen, between Winterthur and St. Gallen. On a map its historic core is easy to find. The compact old town sits on raised ground, its streets packed into a small, elongated shape beside a pond called the Stadtweiher. From there the town spreads outward in lower, more open neighbourhoods toward the Thur valley.
For centuries Wil was closely tied to the Abbey of St. Gallen, and the prince-abbots used the Hof zu Wil, a large building at the heart of the old town, as a residence. The old town remains a small, dense island of lanes and squares, clearly distinct from the broader pattern of later development around it.
Wil is also an important railway junction, where the main line between Zurich and St. Gallen meets regional lines toward Frauenfeld and the Toggenburg.
