Te mapa
Adeje lies on the south-west coast of Tenerife, and its map runs from the mountains down to the sea. Up on the slope is the old town, a compact cluster of streets around a church and main square. Below, the land falls through dry ravines to the coast, where Costa Adeje stretches along the shoreline in a long band of hotels, promenades and beaches.
The two parts are very different. The older settlement grew slowly around agriculture and the landholdings of the Casa Fuerte, a fortified house from the sixteenth century. The coast grew quickly in recent decades with tourism, including the Siam Park water park. Above the old town, the Barranco del Infierno cuts deep into the slope and is one of the best-known walking routes on the island.
An Adeje map poster shows the whole descent: the old centre on its slope, the ravines, the curving hillside roads and the busy coastline. In black and white, the edge of the ocean is sharp and the terraces of development are clear. It is a good way to remember a stay on Tenerife, or to picture home.
The coast forms a long, detailed edge of beaches, small bays and promenades, with resort streets arranged closely behind it.
The historic centre sits higher up the hillside, around its church and square, well above and apart from the coastal development.
This deep ravine cuts into the slope above the old town, and it is one of Tenerife's best-known and most walked routes.
