Te mapa
Agano was formed in 2004 by merging several towns and villages on the eastern edge of the Niigata plain. On a map, the result is a string of separate built-up areas scattered across wide rice fields, each with its own small centre. They are linked by roads and a railway line, with wooded mountains rising to the east.
The city takes its name from the Agano River, one of the major rivers of Japan's Sea of Japan coast, which runs along its southern side. Agano is also known for Hyōko, a small lake where thousands of swans and ducks spend the winter. The birds arrive from Siberia each autumn, and the lake is a registered Ramsar wetland.
An Agano map poster brings these pieces together: the grid of paddy fields, the compact old town centres, the curve of the river and the small, rounded outline of Hyōko. The flat plain and the steep hills make a strong contrast, and in monochrome the field boundaries turn into a fine, even pattern behind the streets.
This small lake is famous for its wintering swans. On the map it is a neat patch of open water on the edge of town, surrounded by fields.
The wide river runs down from the mountains onto the Niigata plain. Its long, braided course gives the southern part of the print a bold flowing line.
Rice fields cover the plain between the town centres in rectangular plots, forming a regular background texture that makes the built-up areas stand out.

Koteā ko Agano
Agano appeals to people who know rural Niigata, birdwatchers who have seen the swans at Hyōko, and anyone who likes the order of a rice-field landscape. The print is calm and uncluttered and works especially well in a minimal interior.
Personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates, perhaps with a year or a family name, and choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Buy the HD files for $9 or order a printed poster.
