Te mapa
Ahwiaa lies in the Ashanti Region of Ghana, just north of Kumasi, along the main road leading out of the city. On a map it appears as a lively cluster of streets strung along the highway, where Kumasi's northern suburbs meet the farmland and forest of the Ashanti countryside.
The village is well known for its woodcarving. Workshops and roadside stalls sell carved stools, masks, figures and other pieces, and many visitors to Kumasi stop here to watch carvers at work. Craft traditions like this are an important part of the region's cultural life.
An Ahwiaa map poster follows the main road as its central line, with side streets branching off irregularly on both sides. The density of the streets shows how the place has grown into Kumasi's suburbs. It is a simple map, but one with a clear story about roads, crafts and a growing city.
The road north from Kumasi runs straight through Ahwiaa, forming the backbone of the map with streets branching off on both sides.
The carving workshops cluster close to the road, where the busiest and densest part of the village forms the centre of the poster.
Around the village, the streets of Kumasi's suburbs gradually thin out into the farmland and green land of the Ashanti countryside.
