Te mapa
Bondoukou lies in the north-east of Ivory Coast, not far from the border with Ghana, in a zone where forest gives way to savanna. On a map the town appears as a spread of irregular streets over gently rolling ground, with an older, closely built centre and roads running out in several directions toward villages and neighbouring towns.
For centuries Bondoukou was a meeting point on trade routes between the forest regions to the south and the Sahel to the north. Its Muslim scholarly and merchant tradition left a large number of mosques, and the town is often described as the city of a thousand mosques. Several peoples, among them the Koulango and Dioula, have long lived here side by side.
A Bondoukou map poster reflects that history of movement and exchange: roads converging on a compact old town, with newer districts spreading more loosely around it. In black and white the pattern is modest and organic, a portrait of a historic crossroads rather than a planned city.
The historic core is a dense, irregular web of lanes and compounds, reflecting the town's long life as a trading and religious centre.
Routes arrive from several directions and meet in the town, a reminder on the map of its old role on trade routes between forest and Sahel.
Beyond the built-up area the map opens into sparse, gently rolling country, framing the town with calm, empty space.
