Te mapa
Aki sits on the eastern coast of Kochi Prefecture, facing Tosa Bay and the open Pacific. From above, the town is a narrow band of streets between the sea and the mountains of Shikoku. A river runs down from the hills and crosses the plain before reaching the coast, and the town has grown along both of its banks.
The shoreline is the clearest line on the map: long and gently curved, with the coastal road and railway running beside it. Inland, the grid breaks up quickly into farm plots and valley roads that follow the terrain. Aki is known as the birthplace of Iwasaki Yataro, the founder of Mitsubishi, and it keeps an old quarter of samurai-era residences.
An Aki map poster keeps the contrast between the dense, low town and the empty sea that fills one side of the frame. Printed in black and white, the coast looks almost like a drawn horizon, and the thin roads climbing into the valleys give the composition a quiet depth..
A long, smooth arc of coast runs along the southern edge of the town, with the road and railway following it closely and the Pacific filling the rest of the frame.
A river comes down from the Shikoku mountains and cuts across the coastal plain, dividing the street pattern before it meets the sea.
North of the town the grid thins into winding roads that follow narrow valleys into forested hills, giving the map a clear edge between settlement and mountain.

Koteā ko Aki
For people with family roots in Kochi, or anyone who has travelled the quiet coast of eastern Shikoku, Aki is a place that means something specific. A map of it reads as a record of a town set between two strong natural edges, the mountains and the sea.
You can add your own title, a subtitle such as a date, and the coordinates line, then choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. The digital files cost $9 and include six print sizes, or you can order a printed poster.
