Te mapa
Alatyr’ stands on the left bank of the Sura River, close to where the Alatyr River joins it, in the southwest of the Chuvash Republic. From above, the town sits between water and woodland: floodplain meadows and oxbow lakes on one side, a grid of streets rising on the other, and dark forest spreading beyond the outskirts.
The town was founded in 1552 as a fortress on the eastern frontier of Muscovy, around the time of the campaign against Kazan. Its older centre retains a regular layout of blocks from later planning, with churches and merchant houses that recall its role as a river trading town on the Sura.
An Alatyr’ map poster captures that layered setting. The winding river, the scattered lakes of the floodplain and the orderly town streets make a composition with a lot of contrast. It is a quiet, rooted image for people from Chuvashia and for anyone who knows the old towns along the Volga's tributaries.
The Sura sweeps past the town in broad bends, with channels and backwaters beside it. On the map it forms a strong natural border along Alatyr’s edge.
Across the river, oxbow lakes and meadow channels leave loose, curved shapes. They contrast with the town grid and add fine detail to the lower part of the poster.
The older part of Alatyr’ is laid out in fairly regular blocks. This planned pattern sits on the site of the 1552 fortress and gives the centre a clear, legible rhythm.
