Albemarle is the county seat of Stanly County, North Carolina, in the Piedmont east of Charlotte. Its downtown is a compact grid around the courthouse, and from above the older streets form a clear, tight centre with residential neighbourhoods spreading into rolling countryside on all sides.
East of town the ground rises into the Uwharrie Mountains, among the oldest ranges in North America and now worn down to low, wooded hills. Here the Yadkin and Pee Dee rivers have been dammed into long reservoirs, including Lake Tillery, and Morrow Mountain State Park sits on the hills above the water.
