Reclaimed shoreline
Land reclamation redrew the waterfront here, so the coastline runs in straight, deliberate lines instead of the irregular curves of the original bay.

Te mapa
Aldrich Bay lies in the Eastern District of Hong Kong Island, between Shau Kei Wan and Sai Wan Ho. Much of it was once open water and was built up on reclaimed land in the late twentieth century. On the map this shows as an unusually regular stretch of coastline, with straight edges, large estate blocks and a planned park where the old bay used to be.
A typhoon shelter still lines part of the waterfront and protects small boats from storms. The Island Eastern Corridor runs close to the shore. A short distance to the east is Lei Yue Mun, the narrow eastern entrance to Victoria Harbour, where Hong Kong Island and the Kowloon side come closest together.
An Aldrich Bay map poster shows a very Hong Kong kind of geography: dense residential towers on engineered land, steep green hills behind, and the harbour defining the edge. The neat lines of the reclamation contrast with the older, more tangled streets of Shau Kei Wan, which makes the composition especially easy to read.
Land reclamation redrew the waterfront here, so the coastline runs in straight, deliberate lines instead of the irregular curves of the original bay.
Breakwaters enclose a basin that protects small boats along the shore. On the poster it appears as a sheltered pocket of water held between long, thin arms.
Large housing estates and a central park fill the reclaimed land. Their big, simple footprints contrast with the fine grain of the older streets nearby.

Koteā ko Aldrich Bay
Many families grew up in Aldrich Bay's estates, and the area holds memories for anyone who has walked the eastern harbourfront or eaten in Shau Kei Wan. The map preserves the shape of a neighbourhood that was literally built out of the sea.
