Alingsås lies in Västra Götaland, about 45 kilometres northeast of Gothenburg, at the southern end of the long lake Mjörn. The Säveån river flows out of the lake and through the town. The historic centre sits close to its banks, a grid of streets lined with preserved wooden houses from the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries.
The town's modern character goes back to Jonas Alströmer, who founded textile manufactories here in the 1720s and helped popularise the potato in Sweden. Today Alingsås is known above all for its cafés. It is often called Sweden's capital of fika, a reputation built on the many coffee houses gathered in its small centre.
On an Alingsås map poster the pattern is clear: an orderly old core, the river threading south, the shore of Mjörn to the north, and lakes and woodland all around. Residential districts spread along ridges and valleys, and the railway between Gothenburg and Stockholm runs straight through town. It is a town that looks well proportioned from above.
The river leaves Mjörn and runs through the town in a narrow, winding course. Several bridges cross it and green paths line its banks, making a soft curve through the grid.
The historic centre keeps a compact, rectangular street plan with low wooden buildings. It is one of the better-preserved small-town cores in western Sweden.
Mjörn to the north and smaller lakes such as Gerdsken to the east give the poster wide, calm areas of water that frame the streets.
