Te mapa
Alto Alegre is a municipality in the northern Brazilian state of Roraima, west of the state capital, Boa Vista. The town sits in open savanna country known as the lavrado. The municipality stretches far to the west into forest, including part of the Yanomami Indigenous Territory. It is a young place, founded as settlers and farmers moved into the region in the late twentieth century.
The town itself shows its recent origins clearly. Streets run in a regular grid of long rectangular blocks with wide avenues, and the whole plan could have been drawn with a ruler. At the edges the grid simply stops. Roads continue as straight lines across the flat grassland toward farms and neighbouring settlements.
An Alto Alegre map poster is a clean, geometric piece: a planned town surrounded by open space. In black and white the pattern becomes almost architectural. It makes an unusual image for anyone connected to Roraima, a state that rarely appears on a living-room wall.
The town's blocks are laid out in an orderly rectangular grid with broad streets, a clear sign of a settlement planned from scratch.
Around the town, Roraima's lavrado savanna opens out flat and largely empty, so the built area stands out sharply on the page.
Straight roads lead out of town toward farmland and, further on, the forested west of the municipality, which reaches into Yanomami lands.
