Te mapa
Ānaiyūr lies on the northern side of Madurai in Tamil Nadu, north of the Vaigai river. It is largely residential. On a map, its streets form an irregular mix of older lanes and newer, straighter layouts, as the city has spread outward over farmland. Toward the edges, streets thin out and fields and water tanks begin to appear.
Madurai is one of the oldest cities in South India and is known above all for the Meenakshi Amman Temple, whose concentric streets form the core of the old city south of the river. Ānaiyūr is further out, part of the city's newer growth, but still tied to it by the main roads leading into the centre.
An Ānaiyūr map poster shows a neighbourhood at the edge of a large, historic city: dense housing, main roads toward the centre and traces of the farmland that came before. It is a personal map, most meaningful to the people who live here.
The area lies north of the Vaigai river, which divides Madurai in two and separates it from the temple city on the southern bank.
Old lanes and newer, more regular residential streets sit side by side, showing how Madurai has expanded over its northern farmland.
Toward the edges, the streets give way to water tanks and fields, a common feature of the landscape around Madurai.
