Te mapa
Aoji-ri lies in North Hamgyong Province, in the far north-eastern corner of North Korea, a short distance from the Tumen River, which forms the border with China and, further downstream, with Russia. The settlement grew up around coal mining, and its map reflects that purpose: housing blocks, rail lines and roads arranged to serve the mines and the industry connected to them.
The area is known for its coal deposits, which supported a chemical industry built on coal as a raw material. Around the settlement, low hills and river valleys shape the road network, while railway lines follow the easiest ground toward neighbouring towns and the border. Detailed, reliable information about the region is limited, and the map is one of the clearest ways to understand how it is organised.
An Aoji-ri map poster offers an unusual subject: an industrial settlement in one of the least visited parts of the world, shown only through its lines. The rail yards, the grouped housing and the valleys around them make a spare, structured composition. It appeals to people interested in north-east Asian geography, and to those with family ties to the Hamgyong region.
Housing, roads and works are grouped in functional clusters, giving the settlement a planned, purposeful look rather than the organic pattern of an old market town.
Railway lines run through the valley and link Aoji-ri with nearby towns, drawing firm, gently curved lines across the map.
The settlement lies close to the Tumen River, the border between North Korea, China and Russia, in a landscape of low hills and valleys.

Koteā ko Aoji-ri
A map of Aoji-ri is for people whose families came from North Hamgyong, and for readers and researchers drawn to places that are hard to see in person. It shows the settlement plainly and calmly, as geography and nothing more.
