Te mapa
Austin's downtown began as a plan. In 1839 Edwin Waller laid out a grid of fourteen blocks on the north bank of the Colorado River, framed by Shoal Creek on the west and Waller Creek on the east. Congress Avenue ran up the middle to the site of the Capitol. That frame is still clear on the map today.
The Colorado, dammed within the city, becomes Lady Bird Lake, a narrow ribbon of water between downtown and the southern neighbourhoods. Bridges cross it at regular intervals. Upstream, Lake Austin winds through steep hills. To the west, the Balcones Escarpment turns the flat grid into curving roads that follow ridges and valleys.
Interstate 35 runs along the eastern side and MoPac along the west, and the University of Texas campus sits just north of downtown. On summer evenings, a large colony of bats leaves from under the Congress Avenue Bridge. An Austin map poster shows the grid, the river and the hills together in one frame.

A slender stretch of the Colorado River that divides downtown from South Austin. Parks line its banks, and a series of bridges crosses it.
West of MoPac, the regular streets give way to looping roads along the Balcones Escarpment. The map turns noticeably softer and more organic.

Koteā ko Austin
Austin draws students, musicians and people who arrived for a job and stayed. A print of the city marks the years spent there, whether that was a first apartment in Hyde Park or a house south of the river.
