Te mapa
Balaklava lies on the southwest coast of Crimea, within the Sevastopol city area, and one of the most distinctive harbours on the Black Sea defines its map. A narrow, curving bay runs inland between steep hills, its entrance so tight and angled that the water cannot be seen from the open sea. The town lines both shores, following the curve of the bay.
On the heights above the entrance stand the ruins of Cembalo, a fortress built by Genoese traders in the fourteenth century. In the Soviet era, the bay's sheltered position made it the site of a secret submarine base, with a tunnel cut through the mountain on its western side, which later became a museum.
Balaklava gave its name to the 1854 battle of the Crimean War that included the Charge of the Light Brigade, fought in the valleys to the north. A Balaklava map poster shows the bay as a slender ribbon of water between the hills, with the town's streets following the shoreline and open slopes rising behind.
The narrow, bending inlet is the heart of the map, a long ribbon of water held by hills and nearly closed at its mouth.
The ruins of Cembalo stand on the high ground above the harbour entrance, overlooking the narrow passage to the sea.
The town's embankments follow both sides of the bay, so the street plan traces the curve of the water rather than forming a grid.
