Te mapa
Baraguá lies in the flat, open countryside of Ciego de Ávila province in central Cuba, a region long dominated by sugarcane. The town grew around a sugar mill, and from above its streets form a modest grid close to the mill and the railway, surrounded by fields that stretch far in every direction. Few natural features interrupt the plan.
In the early twentieth century, workers from the English-speaking Caribbean, including Jamaica and Barbados, came to the region to work in the cane fields and mills, and many settled in Baraguá. Their descendants have kept parts of that heritage alive, including an annual celebration of emancipation, which makes the town distinctive within Cuba.
A Baraguá map poster keeps the plan simple: a compact core of streets, the lines of the railway and the rural roads heading out into the cane country. It is a quiet composition, and it carries a story that the map cannot show but that is well known to anyone with roots here.

Rail lines built to move cane run through and past the town. On the map they appear as long, straight strokes across the flat landscape.
Beyond the streets, the map opens into flat farmland crossed by straight roads, the setting that shaped Baraguá's history and brought its people together.
