From above, Beitbridge is shaped by the Limpopo River and the crossing over it. The river runs along the southern edge of the town, and the main road comes up from the bridge, carrying traffic north into Zimbabwe. Streets and neighbourhoods spread out from this corridor, and the dry landscape around them leaves the map mostly open.
Beitbridge is Zimbabwe's border town with South Africa, opposite Musina on the other side of the Limpopo. The town takes its name from the bridge, which was named after Alfred Beit, a financier whose trust funded it. The crossing is one of the busiest in southern Africa, with trucks and travellers moving between the two countries every day.
A Beitbridge map poster shows a town defined by movement. The river gives the print a strong natural line, and the road from the bridge runs through it like a spine. In black and white, the relationship between the crossing and the town becomes clear.
The Limpopo River forms the border and runs along the southern side of the town. On the map it is the strongest natural feature, a wide line marking the frontier.
The bridge across the Limpopo gives the town its name and purpose. It is the point where the road network connects to South Africa.
From the crossing, the main road heads north toward the rest of Zimbabwe. Streets and buildings gather along it, shaping the town's long form.
