Berbérati is the capital of the Mambéré-Kadéï prefecture and one of the largest towns in the Central African Republic. It lies in the south-west of the country, not far from the border with Cameroon. The town is widely spread, with a central area of more regular blocks around administrative and commercial buildings. Residential quarters extend into the surrounding wooded, gently rolling land.
The region around Berbérati has long been associated with diamond mining, coffee and timber. The town is a hub for roads connecting western CAR with Cameroon, and it is also the seat of a Catholic diocese. On the map these roles show as roads converging on the centre and a street network that gradually loosens into tracks toward the edges.
