Te mapa
Bangui is the capital of the Central African Republic. It was founded in 1889 on the Ubangi River, which forms the border with the Democratic Republic of the Congo. The river passes the city in a broad curve, with the Congolese town of Zongo on the opposite bank. It gives the map its strongest line, along the southern edge.
Just behind the city centre rise wooded hills, and the built-up area spreads around them toward the north and west. Large avenues radiate from central squares, while the outer districts form a looser mesh of streets. Many neighbourhoods are known by their distance from the centre and named PK plus a number, after the kilometre marker.
The city's river port has long connected it with the Congo basin downstream. A Bangui map poster shows the capital clearly and simply: river, hills, the radiating centre and the growth beyond. Anyone who knows the city will recognise its geography straight away, even without a single place name.
The wide river curves past the city and separates it from the DR Congo. Islands and channels in the stream give the poster a strong watery edge.
Wooded higher ground rises just north of downtown and leaves an open shape in the map. The city bends around it and extends beyond.
Main roads spread outward from the centre toward the outer districts. Their kilometre-based names, such as PK5, hint at this straight-line geography.
