Railway terminus
The end of the Transcameroon line gives the city a strong straight element. Tracks and yards cut a clean band through the urban fabric and mark where the journey north by rail stops.

Te mapa
Ngaoundéré is the capital of Cameroon's Adamawa Region and sits on the Adamawa Plateau at roughly 1,100 metres. On the map the city spreads across open, gently rolling ground. Main roads converge on the centre, and neighbourhoods of smaller streets fill the space between them. Hills rise around the edges of the built-up area.
The city is the northern end of the Transcameroon Railway, which links it to Yaoundé and the port of Douala, and the rail yards form a distinct block on the plan. It has long been a trading hub between the south and the north of the country. At its historic heart is the palace of the Lamido, the traditional ruler, within a walled compound.
A Ngaoundéré map poster shows old and new side by side: the compact quarters around the palace, the long straight lines of railway and highway, and the looser residential districts growing outward across the plateau. With no coastline or large river in the frame, the street pattern itself carries the design.
The end of the Transcameroon line gives the city a strong straight element. Tracks and yards cut a clean band through the urban fabric and mark where the journey north by rail stops.
The traditional palace compound near the centre is surrounded by older, denser quarters. Their streets are narrower and less regular than those in the newer districts.
Built on high ground, the city spreads outward in loose neighbourhoods. Hills rise at its margins and open grassland begins where the last streets end.

Koteā ko Ngaoundéré
For people from the Adamawa region, for university students, and for anyone who took the train north from Yaoundé, Ngaoundéré is a place of arrival and departure. A map of it holds the memory of that crossroads.
