Bodināyakkanūr, usually called Bodi, lies in Theni district in Tamil Nadu, at the foot of the Western Ghats close to the border with Kerala. The town sits where the flat, cultivated valley floor meets steep, forested slopes. From above it is a dense network of streets and markets. Fields and coconut groves spread across the plain, and the dark mass of the hills rises to the west.
Bodi has long been a trading centre for cardamom, pepper and other spices grown in the high ranges of Idukki, across the state border. The ghat road to Bodi Mettu climbs from the town in a series of hairpin bends, one of the most striking shapes on the map. From there it continues toward Munnar and the tea estates of Kerala.
