Bokwang Phoenix Park, now often called Phoenix Pyeongchang, lies in Bongpyeong-myeon in Pyeongchang County, Gangwon Province. On a map it is a self-contained resort in a mountain valley. Ski runs fan down a forested slope to a base of hotels and condominiums, a golf course spreads across the lower ground, and a few roads connect it to the surrounding countryside.
During the 2018 Winter Olympics the resort hosted freestyle skiing and snowboard events, including moguls, aerials, halfpipe and slopestyle. The area around Bongpyeong is also linked to buckwheat fields and to When Buckwheat Flowers Bloom, the well-known short story by Lee Hyo-seok, which a local festival celebrates each year.
A Bokwang Phoenix Park map poster is tidy and balanced: the fan of ski runs, the loops of the golf course, the base buildings and the roads leading out of the valley. It is less dramatic than a high alpine resort, but its orderly layout is distinctive, and it makes an appealing record of Korea's Olympic winter.
The runs used in 2018 for moguls, aerials, halfpipe and slopestyle are part of the fan of pistes descending to the base, a direct link to the Olympic Games.
The resort's golf course spreads across the lower ground in a pattern of fairways and paths. Its soft, curving shapes contrast with the straighter ski runs above.
Hotels, condominiums and lift stations gather at the foot of the slopes. This is the densest part of the map and the natural place for the eye to start.
