Te mapa
Bongao is the capital of Tawi-Tawi, the southernmost province of the Philippines, close to the maritime border with Malaysia. The town occupies a small island and part of the neighbouring coast of Sanga-Sanga, and water surrounds it on nearly every side. From above, streets follow the shoreline, and houses on stilts extend out over the shallows.
The island is dominated by Bud Bongao, a forested mountain that rises steeply behind the town. It is considered sacred by many local people, and its slopes are home to troops of macaques. On the map, the mountain appears as a quiet, empty area surrounded by dense coastal settlement.
A Bongao map poster shows a place shaped by the sea and a single peak. The coastline is irregular, with piers, channels and small islands nearby. The streets form a tight band around the mountain's base, and the surrounding water gives the composition a strong, open frame.
The forested mountain rises in the centre of the island, a large open area on the map surrounded by roads and houses along its lower edges.
Homes built on stilts reach into the shallow water along the shore, creating an irregular fringe where town and sea meet.
Narrow channels separate Bongao from neighbouring islands, including Sanga-Sanga, adding water passages and bridges to the map.

Koteā ko Bongao
For people from Tawi-Tawi, Bongao is the centre of island life, and a map of its coast and mountain is a clear picture of home. For travellers who reached this far corner of the Philippines, it records an unusual journey.
Add a title, subtitle and date, and choose one of five styles: Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand. Blueprint suits the island's coastline. The $9 digital files include six print sizes, each as a 300 DPI PNG and PDF.
