Te mapa
Burlington sits on the west bank of the Mississippi in southeast Iowa, where bluffs rise directly behind a narrow riverfront. The downtown grid climbs from the water in tight blocks. On the heights above, the neighbourhoods are broken up by wooded ravines, so the map mixes orderly lines with irregular streets bent by the terrain.
Burlington served as the capital of Iowa Territory before the seat of government moved on, and its historic districts still show the density of a nineteenth-century river port. Its best-known street is Snake Alley, a steep brick lane with tight switchbacks that has often been called one of the most crooked streets in the world.
Across the river, the Great River Bridge carries US 34 into Illinois on a cable-stayed span, and railway lines follow the bank below the bluffs. On a Burlington map poster the Mississippi fills a broad band of the frame. It sits against the fine grid of the old town and the looser streets climbing the hills.

The cable-stayed crossing to Illinois draws a clean diagonal over the wide Mississippi. It is one of the few lines linking the Iowa bank to the flat floodplain opposite.
Above downtown the land rises sharply, and streets on the heights curve around wooded ravines. The upland neighbourhoods look far less regular than the grid below them.
