Cantagalo is in the mountainous north-central part of Rio de Janeiro state in Brazil, inland from the coast and beyond the ranges of the Serra do Mar. The town sits in a valley, and its map follows the land. Streets run along the lower ground beside a watercourse, then climb in short, bending sections up the slopes, and the edges are set by the hills.
The municipality has a notable literary connection. Euclides da Cunha, the author of Os Sertões, one of the defining works of Brazilian literature, was born within its boundaries in 1866.
