Te mapa
Nova Friburgo sits high in the mountains of Rio de Janeiro state, and from above it reads as a ribbon rather than a grid. The town follows its valley floor, streets running parallel to the river, while side roads climb briefly into the hills before giving way to open, contoured slopes.
The town was founded in 1818 by settlers from Switzerland, and the name recalls the canton of Fribourg. German families followed a few years later, and the cooler mountain climate still sets the town apart from the coast. A Nova Friburgo map poster shows that highland setting through pure line work, with the terrain implied by where the streets stop.
In recent decades the town has become known across Brazil for its clothing and lingerie workshops, which fill many of the smaller streets. On paper, though, the story is geographic: a settlement that grew wherever the valley allowed, branching into side valleys and leaving the ridges almost untouched.
The main streets trace the river through the centre, so the densest part of the map forms a long, slightly winding band rather than a compact core.
Neighbourhoods reach out along smaller valleys, creating finger-like extensions of streets that end abruptly where the mountain slopes become too steep to build on.
Large blank areas between the fingers of streets mark forested hills, giving the poster a strong contrast between dense lines and open paper.

Koteā ko Nova Friburgo
For people who grew up in the serra or escaped the summer heat of Rio there, the shape of the valley is instantly familiar. It makes a quiet reminder of mountain air, winding roads and a town with an unusual Swiss beginning.
