Te mapa
Cheorwon is in the north-west of Gangwon Province, right against the Demilitarized Zone. Much of it is built on a broad basalt plain formed by ancient lava flows, and on a map it looks unusually flat and open for mountainous Gangwon. Rice paddies spread in regular patterns, and scattered villages and small towns sit among them.
The Hantan River has cut a deep gorge into this lava plain. Its winding line, with cliffs and rock formations such as Goseokjeong, is one of the most striking features in the area. Mountains frame the plain to the east and south, and the northern edge ends at the DMZ, where roads simply stop. A Cheorwon map poster shows that unusual border clearly.
During the Korean War, this area was part of the so-called Iron Triangle and saw heavy fighting. Ruins such as the former Workers' Party building still stand as reminders. Today the paddies and the restricted border zone are important winter habitat for cranes, so Cheorwon is known to birdwatchers as well as to people interested in history.
Old lava flows created an unusually level landscape. On the map it appears as a wide, even field pattern, very different from the mountains around it.
The river winds through a deep channel cut into basalt. Its curves and rock formations draw a strong, sinuous line across the plain.
To the north, roads and settlements end at the Demilitarized Zone. The resulting blank edge makes the map both quiet and unusual.

Koteā ko Cheorwon
Cheorwon matters to soldiers who served near the border, to families with roots north of it and to travellers who have seen the cranes over the winter fields. The map holds that complex landscape in a calm, graphic form.
