Te mapa
Goyang lies directly northwest of Seoul, and much of its map is the result of deliberate planning. Ilsan, the new town built in the early 1990s, is laid out in wide rectangular superblocks separated by straight boulevards, a pattern that reads almost like graph paper from above. Older settlements, farmland and green belt fill the gaps to the north and east.
The southern edge of the city follows the Han River as it widens toward the Yellow Sea, and several bridges link Goyang with the districts across the water. In the heart of Ilsan, Ilsan Lake Park wraps around a large man-made lake that forms the city's green centre, with the KINTEX exhibition centre a short distance away.
A Goyang-si map poster shows a satellite city with its own clear identity. The ordered blocks of Ilsan contrast with the broad river and with the mountain slopes to the east, where the western edge of Bukhansan National Park rises toward Seoul. Recent planning and older topography sit side by side, drawn in precise line.

The city's southern boundary follows the broad lower Han River, a wide band of water that gives the map a strong diagonal edge as it heads toward the sea.
Straight boulevards divide the new town into large, regular blocks of apartment complexes, parks and schools. It is a clear example of the Korean new towns planned around the capital.
