Te mapa
Itaewon lies in Yongsan-gu, on the southern slope of Namsan, the mountain at the center of Seoul. Its map is organized around Itaewon-ro, a main road that runs roughly east–west along the lower slope. From it, narrow lanes climb steeply north and drop away to the south, bending with the terrain rather than following any planned grid.
For decades, the neighborhood's character was shaped by the neighboring Yongsan Garrison, the large United States military base whose land is now being turned into a national park. Itaewon became known as one of the most international areas of Seoul. The Seoul Central Mosque, opened in 1976, stands on the hill above the main road, and embassies are scattered across the surrounding slopes.
An Itaewon map poster shows a place defined by its slopes. Above the main road, the lanes are tightly packed and irregular. Below it, the ground opens toward the large former base. The forested mass of Namsan rises along the northern side of the frame. The pattern is intricate and rewards a closer look, especially at larger print sizes.
The main road runs along the slope as the district's spine. Most side streets branch off it at irregular angles as they climb or descend.
The wooded mountain to the north gives the print a broad green shape, and the neighborhood's streets press up against its lower flanks.
The former garrison land to the southwest forms a large, sparsely built area beside the district. It is being converted into one of the city's largest parks.

Koteā ko Itaewon
Many people passed through Itaewon while stationed in Seoul, studying abroad or starting a new life in Korea. A map of its hillside lanes is a precise reminder of a place that was often their first home in the city.
