Seongnam-si lies just south of Seoul, and its map is made of distinct parts. The older districts of Sujeong and Jungwon climb steep hillsides in a dense, irregular pattern, built quickly from the late 1960s. To the south, Bundang is a planned new town from the early 1990s, with wide roads, apartment blocks and the Tancheon stream running through its centre.
Further west, Pangyo is home to a large technology district where many of South Korea's software and gaming companies have offices. On the northeastern heights lies part of Namhansanseong, a mountain fortress listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
