Te mapa
Suwon lies south of Seoul in Gyeonggi Province, and at its centre is something few modern cities have: a complete historic fortress. From above, the walls of Hwaseong form an irregular loop around the old town, following the hills on the west and crossing the Suwoncheon stream on the east. Gates such as Paldalmun appear as small, distinct shapes where roads pass through the wall.
Outside the fortress, the city spreads out in modern districts of wide roads and apartment blocks. To the north, Gwanggyo Lake Park and new developments form broad, rounded shapes. On a Suwon map poster, the contrast between the historic loop of the walls and the regular modern grid tells the story of the city in one image.
Hwaseong Fortress was built between 1794 and 1796 under King Jeongjo of the Joseon dynasty. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After damage in the twentieth century, much of it was reconstructed using detailed records from its original construction. Today Suwon is also home to the headquarters of Samsung Electronics, one of the largest technology companies in the world.
The fortress walls trace an irregular loop around the old town, following hills and crossing water. It is the strongest and most recognisable shape on the map.
A small stream runs north–south through the fortress and the city. Its line connects the historic centre with the districts beyond.
In the north, the lake park and surrounding new districts form wide, rounded shapes. They offer a calm contrast to the dense blocks elsewhere.

Suwon suits people who walked the fortress walls, worked in the city's tech campuses, or studied nearby. The looping walls give the poster a clear historic focus that is instantly recognisable.
