Chodavaram is a town in the north of coastal Andhra Pradesh, a short drive inland from Visakhapatnam and not far from the first ridges of the Eastern Ghats. From above it shows a dense core of lanes and small blocks around the main road, with houses thinning out into a patchwork of fields, tanks and scattered villages on every side.
Agriculture defines the area, and sugarcane and paddy fields reach almost to the edge of town. Water tanks, the traditional reservoirs of South India, appear as rounded shapes among the fields, while canals and seasonal streams draw thin, wandering lines. The main roads leave the centre toward neighbouring towns and toward the coastal city.
