Ciudad Constitución is the seat of the municipality of Comondú in Baja California Sur, on a broad plain on the Pacific side of the peninsula. It is a fairly young town, founded in the twentieth century as a farming centre, and its map shows it. A regular grid of streets lines up with Federal Highway 1, which runs straight through the middle of town.
Around the town, the Santo Domingo valley opens up as a patchwork of large rectangular fields, watered with groundwater in an otherwise dry desert. In black and white, the orderly town and the geometric farmland merge into one long, disciplined composition. Empty desert and the low sierra to the east frame it.
To the west, a road leads to the port of San Carlos on Magdalena Bay, where grey whales arrive each winter to breed and give birth.
