Clayton is the seat of St. Louis County, just west of the city of St. Louis. For a small city, it has an unusual skyline. Its downtown is a tight cluster of office buildings and government offices, so it works as a second business centre for the region. On the map, those large blocks sit right beside quiet residential streets with generous lots.
The city borders Forest Park to the east, and part of the Danforth Campus of Washington University in St. Louis extends into it, where the quads and campus buildings form a distinctive pattern.
