Te mapa
Cobija is the capital of Pando, Bolivia's northernmost department, and lies on the Acre River at the border with Brazil. The Brazilian towns of Brasiléia and Epitaciolândia stand across the river, so the map shows a cross-border urban area shaped around the water. The town rises over rolling ground, and its streets follow the terrain rather than a strict grid.
Surrounded by Amazon rainforest, Cobija grew as a centre for rubber and later for Brazil nut collection, which remains important to the region. It is also a free trade zone that draws shoppers from across the border. Bridges over the Acre connect it with Brazil, and the river's winding course draws a strong curved line along one side of the town.
A Cobija map poster brings out this relationship between river, forest and border. The bends of the Acre form a natural frontier, the Bolivian and Brazilian streets face each other across it, and the forest beyond the edges becomes open space. In black and white, the curves of river and road make a graceful, unusual composition.
The winding river forms the international border, curving past the town and giving the poster its most expressive line between Bolivia and Brazil.
Bridges link Cobija with Brasiléia and Epitaciolândia on the opposite bank, so the two countries appear as one continuous urban area on the map.
Roads climb and dip over rolling ground, bending with the terrain and breaking the grid into irregular blocks surrounded by forest.
