David is the capital of Chiriquí Province in western Panama, a regional hub not far from the border with Costa Rica. It lies on flat land between the Pacific coast and the highlands, and on clear days the mass of Volcán Barú is visible to the north. The Pan-American Highway runs through the city, linking it to both countries.
From above, David has a fairly regular street grid, with a central plaza and blocks that extend outward in orderly lines. Rivers cross the surrounding plain, and the city's edges give way to farmland and roads leading into the highlands and down toward the coast.
