Te mapa
Managua lies on the southern shore of Lake Managua, also called Xolotlán, a wide lake that forms the whole northern edge of the map. The land rises gently to the south. Around the city are small volcanic crater lakes, including Tiscapa, Asososca and Nejapa. They appear as neat round shapes set into the streets.
In 1972 an earthquake destroyed much of central Managua. The city did not rebuild its old downtown in the same form. Instead it grew outward, with new commercial areas along main roads and neighbourhoods spread across the hills. That is why the map has no single dense core, only a loose network of districts joined by highways and roundabouts.
Many streets in Managua have no widely used names, and addresses are traditionally given by reference to landmarks, sometimes ones that no longer exist. A Managua map poster makes an unusual portrait: a capital where the lake and the crater lagoons stand out more clearly than any central square.
The broad lake runs along the northern side of the city. Its smooth shoreline contrasts with the tangled streets just inland.
A near-circular crater lake close to the old centre, surrounded by roads and park land. It is one of the most striking round shapes on any capital city map.
After 1972 the city grew in separate patches along the main roads. The map shows many small centres rather than one dense downtown.

Koteā ko Managua
For Nicaraguans abroad and anyone who has lived in Managua, this map traces a city that is known more by memory than by street signs. The lake and lagoons make it instantly recognisable.
