Te mapa
Des Plaines sits northwest of Chicago in Cook County, and its most distinctive map feature is the river that gives it its name. The Des Plaines River runs through the city from north to south, lined with forest preserves. It forms a green, winding corridor that divides the street grid into two unequal halves.
The downtown clusters around the Metra station, where commuter rail lines and major roads converge in a tight knot. To the south, the city borders O'Hare International Airport, so the long straight runways and taxiways press right up against residential blocks. The rest of the plan is a classic Midwestern pattern of rectangular blocks, broken up by parks and industrial zones.
Des Plaines is where Ray Kroc opened his first McDonald's franchise in 1955, a milestone in the chain's history. A Des Plaines map poster shows the city in its geographic setting, between the quiet line of the river and the hard geometry of the airport, and it makes a sharp print for anyone with roots in the northwest suburbs.
The river snakes through the city inside a band of forest preserves, a soft, continuous curve set against the surrounding grid.
Railway lines and main roads meet around the Metra station, making the centre the most tightly woven part of the map.
The airport's runways and aprons adjoin the southern neighbourhoods, a band of long, straight lines at the bottom of the frame.
