Te mapa
Dubna sits on the upper Volga about 120 kilometres north of Moscow, and water defines almost every edge of it. The Volga divides the town, the Ivankovo Reservoir spreads out upstream, the Dubna River flows in, and the Moscow Canal begins here and runs south toward the capital. On a map the town becomes a set of separate districts joined by dams, bridges and long, straight avenues through pine forest.
The town was built around the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research, founded in 1956, and it remains one of the best-known science cities in Russia. Research here led to the discovery of several superheavy elements, and element 105, dubnium, is named after the town. A large statue of Lenin stands at the entrance to the canal and is one of the town's most photographed sights.
A Dubna map poster turns this interplay of water and planning into a clear graphic composition. The reservoir and river become broad, calm fields, the canal a straight channel heading south, and the institute districts neat blocks set within the forest. It is a natural choice for physicists, graduates of the local university and anyone who has spent time in this unusual town.
The canal leaves the Volga at Dubna and heads south toward Moscow. Its straight, engineered channel contrasts sharply with the natural curves of the rivers around it.
Locals call the reservoir the Moscow Sea. It spreads upstream from the dam at Dubna, and its large expanse of water fills a big part of the frame.
The Volga splits Dubna into separate districts on either bank, linked by the dam and bridges. The town reads as a pair of settlements facing each other across the river.

Koteā ko Dubna
Dubna has a strong identity for such a small town, built on science, water and forest. A map of it works for anyone who studied or worked at the institute, sailed on the reservoir or simply spent summers along the Volga.
Choose Classic black & white, Noir, Paper, Blueprint or Sand, and personalise the title, subtitle and coordinates line, perhaps with a lab name or a graduation date. HD files cost $9 for six sizes, and printed matte posters are available too.
