Edwardsville is the county seat of Madison County, Illinois, in the Metro East area across the Mississippi from St. Louis. It was founded in the early nineteenth century and is one of the oldest cities in the state. Its downtown still has the compact, walkable grid of an early American town. Older blocks and tree-lined streets gather near the courthouse and form the densest part of the map.
Southern Illinois University Edwardsville covers much of the south side of town on a large, wooded site. On the map, the campus is a distinct area of curving roads, open lawns, parking fields and building clusters. An Edwardsville map poster sets that planned campus beside the older grid, two very different urban patterns side by side.
Beyond the centre, residential neighbourhoods and newer subdivisions extend in every direction. Creeks and wooded ravines run through the landscape toward the Mississippi floodplain, and highways link the city to St. Louis and the rest of the region. Seen as a whole, Edwardsville is a small city with a long past and a clear, legible structure.

SIUE occupies a large wooded site south of the city centre. Its curving drives, lawns and building clusters form an open, park-like pattern quite unlike the downtown blocks.
Wooded creek valleys run through the city and the land around it. They add soft, irregular lines that break up the residential streets and hint at the river bottoms nearby.
